a corner of the real remaining

mary wong hou lam

I was sitting
under a plumeria tree
bathed with
a tender yellow
from a solitary lamp post

drunk with sketching
a silent history
anchored in
buildings of yellow and white
wooden shutters
and ceramic tiles

music from a phonograph
fills the air
with the death of
a lover long gone

tranquil blue
of twilight
broken
then a java apple matures

I want to create a door
and lock it
keep it all selfishly
just for myself

to dream my corner
of the real remaining
in a city so unreal

anti-wrinkle

mary wong hou lam

this woman, aged sixty
holds a little vial of eye cream in the ad
she has a smooth face
with zero wrinkles
but still somehow
she looks her age

a piercing gaze
radiates from
somewhere deep down in her pupils
she can’t help
telling so much

sigh
it is difficult
to make your eyes conspire
it isn’t just the skin
it’s the eyes don’t lie

two women took a cage of pigeons from three lamps* to gou si duk sold for freeing

The cage swayed casually
as they walked to the main street.
Their laughter and gossip
barely covered the woot-woot
from that little box stuffed with crazy fat birds.

They arrived at the Gou Si Duk.
Facing the busy traffic,
one of the cage sides was lifted.
All rushed to spread their wings
in between lorries, cables
and chimneys.

Still holding the empty cage,
they put their hands together.
They prayed, bowed to the air
and there was a sigh of relief.

The laughter
and gossip resumed.
All are free.

anyone
touches a piece of paper
gives me a fright
that rushes across my skin

the very thought of it can
generate a scratching sound
on a paper texture
so real that
I get the same shivering
goosebumps itchy ears

of heroes it was said
Tin batt pa dei batt pa
Fear not heaven,
neither earth.
but they never say
Fear no paper rubbing, spiders, cockroaches,
or peanut butter
on the roof of your mouth

have to teach you how to fall

mary wong hou lam

I have to teach you how to fall
so that you can
capture all of me
from
head
to
toe
into your heart

then you can decide
if you should
keep falling
till
you
get
to
love
me
