snail

jess jia ting ting

cozy shell
deprived
soft body
exposed
further pressed by
a huddle of bricks
giving birth to
a gorgeous skyscraper
built on the back of
the naked snail

this tiny creature
can’t even reach
the first floor

jess jia ting ting

so pick up
the brink of the sky
and pull and push it up
this is the faith

memory of 5.12.2008  at my university
wen chuan earthquake
jess jia ting ting

sky as roof
grass for bed
we slept back to back
clung to each other

played
poker
told jokes
chatted
made riddles
sang songs

            —

in each corner
of the playground
light let in
scent of the fresh mud
in every atom of the air
alive
no room
for desperate shadows

in a big dark box

jess jia ting ting

mice slip around
tails wag
foxes plot
sly flashing eyes
snakes seducing someone
tongues put out

then a sun shines in
all are seen

he died

jess jia ting ting

if the taxi driver hadn’t
appreciated the streetscape
he wouldn’t have…

if he had kissed his wife
for one second more
or for one second less
before going out
he wouldn’t have …

if…

who says
destiny is ours to control?

a ghost rehearses this
question for all of eternity

just words

jess jia ting ting

I asked you to
tell me you love me

yes you held my hands
you murmured
‘I love you’
but you kept your eyes
fixed on the door
