the empty room

the empty room
iris fan

she wanted to pack up everything
she owned—
books, clothes, records
postcards, love and break-up letters
reading lamp, armchair
and a rusted bicycle

in the middle of the room
she folded the bed like a piece of paper
a game about dividing
played so well when she was small
counted, averaged, shared
an apple
handful of sweets

midnight
she clung to the wall
back and forth like a cat
the empty room was so heavy
her finger nails slipped
like the shadow of the moon
she fell into the endless well
